Overview

Over the past decades Prof. Park has been involved with theoretical/practical research and education in information and systems security. Currently, he is Syracuse University’s principal Point of Contact (POC) at the Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) in Information Assurance (IA), designated by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) – both for Education and Research at the university. He is also the Principal Investigator (PI) for the Department of Defense (DoD) Information Assurance Scholarship Program (IASP) at Syracuse University.

Since he joined the School of Information Studies (iSchool) at Syracuse University in 2002, he has been awarded numerous research and education grants in information and systems security. He was the lead faculty member in developing the security curriculum for the iSchool, including the Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) in Information Security Management (ISM). Currently, he is the director of the CAS ISM program. He established the Laboratory for Applied Information Security Technology (LAIST) at the school to perform practical research in information and systems security. He was nominated for the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship (2004) as a young scientist in computer science (38 past Sloan Fellows have become Nobel Laureates). He has been serving as a key contributor to the high-technology economy of New York State, collaborating with the New York State Center for Advanced Technology in Computer Applications and Software Engineering (CASE). He served as an invited review panelist for the National Science Foundation (NSF)'s Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) on Computer Science and the Trustworthy Computing (TC) Program. Before he joined the iSchool, he worked for the Center for High Assurance Computer Systems (CHACS) at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Washington, D.C.

Teaching Interests

Since Prof. Park joined the iSchool in July 2002, he has developed several security courses and lab modules based on his expertise and experience in information and systems security for both on-campus and online sections during regular and one-week summer semesters. These courses are balanced with lectures, student-led discussions, research activities, and hands-on experience via lab sessions. He has taught and advised students in various academic programs, including the iSchool, the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science, Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, the Whitman School of Management, the Newhouse School of Public Communications, and College of Law for their research and career development in information security.
